Lot 657
1793 C-4 R3 PCGS graded AU50. Glossy chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning in the protected areas. Excellent eye appeal, although there are a couple marks. The most-notable mark is a foldover planchet lamination reaching down into the field right of the cap. The lamination begins at the rim left of the I in LIBERTY and reaches around the dentil tips to the top of the cap where it turns down into the field. The lamination was struck into the field and now shows only a fine outline at its margins. The only other mark is a tiny scratch off the tip of the bust. The reverse is void of any notable defects. MDS, Manley state 2.0. Tiny lumps caused by die rust are scattered over the obverse, including one up from the top of the 7. Struck slightly off center to K-3 leaving some of the border beads off the planchet on the reverse. A nice example of our first Federal half cent. Our grade is VF35. Pop 16; 70 finer at PCGS in BN.
Estimated Value $15,000-UP.

1794 C-1a R3 Large Edge Letters NGC graded AU58 Brown. Repunched 179. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown and olive. The surfaces are smooth and display only a few trivial marks. A light rim nick off the chin and a vertical nick in the field before the neck are the only notable flaws. Great eye appeal. Nicely struck E-MDS, Manley state 2.0 early. The die clashmark behind the head is faint and the repunching on the 179 is clear. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is EF40. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Pop 2; 1 in 62; 1 in 63 at NGC.
Estimated Value $8,000-UP.

1794 C-2a R2+ VF35. Small Edge Letters. Very attractive glossy chocolate and dark steel brown. Smooth and virtually flawless except for a couple minor disturbances on the reverse rim, the strongest being a light rim bruise at the R in AMERICA. Nicely struck and well centered on a solid planchet. MDS, Manley state 3.0, showing clear die clashmarks before the portrait. Superior to the Manley plate coin for the die state. Weight 101.9 grains.

1794 C-8 R5 VF20. Five points sharper but the toning is a bit dark and there are a few very light contact marks on the cheek and chin, all blended perfectly into the natural toning. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown. Nicely struck LDS, Manley state 2.0, showing a clear die crack down through the second T in STATES. Not perfect but still quite nice for this very tough die variety. This coin placed 5th in the Half Cent Happening competition at the 2006 EAC Convention, and it ranks among the top 10 of the variety. Weight 105.6 grains. Comes with a nice provenance.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

1794 C-9 R2 G6. The obverse is slightly sharper but the reverse is a bit weaker. Glossy chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are some contact marks. The obverse is very nice except for a pair of old pinscratches and the right half of the reverse is uneven thanks to a few very dull dents. The date and legends are complete except for F-AM, which are faint at best. EDS, Manley state 1.0. The obverse is not cracked.

Otherwise this piece is really nice, virtually flawless. Frosty steel and light chocolate brown. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0, prior to any die swelling at AME. 1795 C-2a R3 Punctuated date with Lettered Edge VF30. Slightly sharper with a faint, very light vertical scratch down the face into the field under the chin. The scratch barely breaks the toning and is only visible when the light hits at a certain angle. The only other marks are a thin vertical nick on the bottom of the cap and a very light nick on the L in HALF. Otherwise this piece is choice and the eye appeal remains outstanding. Beautiful glossy chocolate brown with hints of frosty luster remaining in the protected areas. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with bulges in the field before the portrait, at AME, and in the center of the reverse. The edge lettering is bold. A truly beautiful example of a variety that is tough to find in high grade. Weight 101.6 grains.

1795 C-2a R3 Punctuated date with Lettered Edge G6. Very slightly sharper but there are myriad fine old scratches on the portrait and in the center of the reverse. All these scratches are light and blend perfectly into the glossy dark olive brown and chocolate patina. The surfaces are decent and reasonably smooth, but a glass reveals uniform extremely fine granularity under the gloss. No verdigris or other marks. The date and legends are strong except for the usual weakness at AME from die swelling associated with the late die state. The edge lettering is complete and clear. LDS, Manley state 3.0. 1795 C-3 R5+ Punctuated Date with Plain Edge AG3. Sharpness VG7, even better in some places, but this piece was banged up a bit and the planchet is uneven as a result. In addition, a crude circle was scratched into the center of the obverse. Fortunately the color is an attractive glossy light chocolate brown fading to darker olive brown in protected areas. No corrosion or verdigris. The date and legends are bold except for HALF CENT, which is gone. A tough variety that's seldom offered in any grade. Weight 75.2 grains.

Slightly glossy olive and steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. No marks or verdigris. This piece offers nice eye appeal in spite of the imperfect surfaces. 1795 C-5b R4 Plain Edge without Pole, Thick Planchet VF25. Sharpness VF30 or slightly better but lightly cleaned and retoned glossy light olive and brown with a hint of sea-green toning at the date. The surfaces are smooth and attractive. The only marks are three small abrasions on the obverse rim, and these are spaced in a way that suggests the marks are from tiny tacks used to hold this piece against a display board. One mark is in the dentils above the R in LIBERTY, another is in the dentils off the bust tip, and the third is in the dentils left of the lowest curls. In spite of these minor defects, this piece is at the lower end of the condition census for the thick planchet sub-variety. (The thick planchet version was struck on planchets cut down from large cent planchets, either ones that were spoiled by mint error strikes or planchets that went unused for some reason.) No trace of large cent undertype is visible on this piece. Weight 115.2 grains (versus the normal thin planchet weight standard of 84.0 grains).
Estimated Value $3,500-UP.

1795 C-6a R2 Plain Edge without Pole G5. Struck over 1794 Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent. Several points sharper but covered with very fine granularity, strongest on the reverse where there are traces of greenish olive verdigris and a couple shallow fissures filled with reddish slag. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel. The date is relatively weak but complete and easily readable while the legends are strong. Traces of the TAL Cent undertype are visible left of the date and below the 5 where the RK of NEW YORK is located. EDS, Manley state 1.0. Struck slightly off center to K-8. Weight 78.7 grains.

1796 C-2 R4 With Pole G5. Several points sharper but the surfaces are lightly corroded. The roughness is very fine, strongest AMERICA where there are traces of very shallow reddish verdigris mixed in with the roughness. The only marks are a barely visible rim bruise at the L in LIBERTY and a dull rim nick over the second S in STATES. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel mixed with reddish brown toning at AMERICA. The date is clear and the legends are complete except for weakness at RICA and ALF. There is a faint spot of slightly darker toning in the field left of the top of the cap and a splash of darker olive toning at TATES. The only contact mark is a tiny nick hidden in the dentils right of the tip of the nose. Nicely struck MDS displaying subtle swelling from CA to the fraction. No verdigris, but there is a dig on the E in LIBERTY that obliterates much of that letter plus a hairline scratch from that E through the cap. These marks blend perfectly into the dark chocolate and olive toning. Nicely struck but slightly off center to K-2. EDS, Manley state 1.0 early, clearly earlier than the Manley plate coin. 1797 C-3b R4 Low Head with Lettered Edge VG10. Sharpness VF25 but lightly corroded and the obverse has been smoothed, mostly in the field before the portrait. There are a few shallow pitmarks on both sides, the largest of these at the left top of the O in OF. The rims also display some small disturbances, but many of those are caused by the edge letters which hang off the planchet (the edge letters were designed for a thicker planchet and are too tall for the thin planchets used for this variety). The planchet is not perfectly round, which is often the case since the planchets for this variety were cut from spoiled large cents rather than rolled planchet stock. Nicely retoned glossy dark chocolate and olive brown. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the edge letters are strong. Far from perfect but not bad for the tough lettered edge sub-variety. Weight 79.2 grains.

1800 C-1 R2 EF45. Slightly sharper with a thin line (similar to a planchet cutter impression) arcing on the bust above the second 0 in the date. A similar arc shows on the reverse just right of OF. These may be mint-made errors, but that isn't certain and they do catch your eye. Otherwise this piece is quite nice and offers excellent eye appeal. Frosty dark steel and olive with lighter tan and steel brown toning faded down from mint color in the protected areas. Satiny mint luster shows on both sides. Nicely struck M-LDS, Manley state 4.0. The curl left of the date is incomplete from die polishing. In addition, there is a fine double profile on the tip of the nose, lips, neck, and the 18 in the date (all from die bounce).

Lot 674
1802/0 C-1 R6 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1800 PCGS graded AG3. Sharpness VG7, even better in a few areas, but the surfaces are covered with very fine roughness, strongest in the softly struck area at the bust tip. The only verdigris is some microscopic reddish carbon in protected areas, strongest at STA, but this stuff is barely visible and does not detract. There is a nick on the forehead, another under the eye, and a couple more light contact marks on the bust. The strike is uneven, weak on the bust and at OF, thanks to non-parallel die faces. Most researchers believe all of this variety were struck on spoiled large cent planchets. There are very faint hints of some undertype at the bust, but the wear and imperfect surfaces make identifying any undertype virtually impossible. The date is complete, but the 2 is faint due to the uneven strike. The legends are complete except for OF, which is faint due to the poor strike in that area. A decent, rather nicely detailed example of this extremely rare variety. Our grade is AG3+, very close to G4. The overdate feature and "Reverse of 1800" type are noted on the PCGS label.

Slightly glossy dark olive and steel with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. The two-tone appearance accents the details and help the eye appeal. Not the most attractive half cent in this offering, but certainly one of the rarest in terms of the die state. The obverse is finely doubled on the date and all the devices. Plated Walter Breen's half cent encyclopedia, page 476 of the "Whoops" chapter, where Breen identifies this piece as having been "struck on a cut-down cent." Only a touch of friction on the highest points from mint state. The only marks are a couple faint hairlines well hidden in the hair. Excellent eye appeal for the grade. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0. The repunching on the 6 is obvious. A tiny rim cud break joins three dentils even with the upper edge of the bust and a similar rim cud break connects three dentils above the B in LIBERTY. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Softly struck on the top of the obverse and on the opposing lower part of the wreath, but the bust tip is strongly impressed (which is unusual). Removed from an NGC slab graded MS61 Brown (NGC label included, and it shows the die variety).
Estimated Value $600-UP.

The repunching on the 6 is clear and the reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW. The bust tip and opposing area at the top of the wreath are softly impressed, as often seen on this variety.

1808/7 C-2 R3 Overdate 8 over 7 VF20. Mostly glossy light olive and chocolate brown with subtle overtones of sea green and light bluish steel in protected areas. Nice surfaces with only a few minor defects, including a small patch of microscopic roughness just right of the date and a couple light contact marks at ES in STATES. A very tiny planchet clip weakens a few dentils above the B in LIBERTY, and this feature can help identify the coin. EDS, Manley state 1.0, showing only a faint die crack through the top of RTY.
